Mommy meets Ian

Ian and Mommy meet face-to-face. The anesthesiologist shades Ian's sensitive eyes from the bright lights of the operating room.

Ian weighs in

Time to weigh my little man. Ian is 10 pounds and 13 ounces. That's a hefty lad! Note the umbilical cord, which looks like a translucent slug trying to escape from Ian's tummy. Ew. Doctors say it will dry up and fall off in a week or two, and it does.

Time for a fuss

I am displeased by all the poking and the prodding. Also, it's very bright in the world. And thirdly, where's my Mommy?

Daddy gets a closer look

When the doctor is ready, she invites me over for a closer look at my little boy. Ian's so dry and warm now, that the moment seems right for a bit of a pee. The pediatrician quickly moves a towel over little Ian's nether region. Nicely handled.

Ian's a big boy

The doctors and nurses agree: Ian is a very big boy. Here's one of the very first pictures of Ian ever taken. The nurse and pediatrician are cleaning Ian up and looking him over to make sure he's healthy. Until now, Ian's been nice and warm inside Mommy. But a little guy can get chilly in this great big world, so doctors hold him under a heat lamp to keep him warm.

Ian is born!

In the operating room, doctors are helping Mommy bring Ian into the world. At 11:52 am, Ian Magnus was born. Here's a picture of Mommy just after Ian was born.

Mommy gets ready.

The nurses got Mommy all ready for Ian's birth. They put her in a hospital gown and hairnet, and they attached an IV tube to her hand. Yummy! Tastes like strawberries!
